English Premier League club Southampton have announced the signing of Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu.

The 21-year-old’s buyout clause was triggered by the Saints in a deal reported to be worth €12m (£10.9m).

The Ghanaian put pen to paper on a a four-year contract that will keep him at St Mary’s Stadium until 2024.

Ligue 1 side Rennes also showed strong interest in the highly-rated centre-back but Salisu ultimately preferred the move to England.

The financial offer made by Southampton and the possibility of playing in the Premier League are said to have been key in his decision.
