The chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee, Mr. Wilson Arthur has revealed that their contract with MTN, headline sponsors of the competition has not been abrogated.
Reports went rife in the media that MTN Ghana has threatened to end their relationship with the Ghana Football Association should the 2019/2020 season is cancelled.
According to the report, the telecommunications company will not be happy with any attempt to cancel the 2019/20 season and will abrogate the contract if it happens.
But speaking to Fox FM on the matter, chairman of the MTN FA Cup Committee Wilson Arthur has swiftly denied the reports insisting there is nothing like that.
“It’s not true. there is nothing like that,” he said.
“We all know how sponsorship works. Corporate sponsorship is different.
“If you agree you are playing ‘x’ number of matches and you negotiate and agree on the number of matches, and you end up not playing that number of matches you don’t’t expect them to give you all the money.
“That is what happens. You have played some and got to somewhere and the league has been suspended. They will also naturally freeze their sponsorship and when you start they will activate.”
The CEO of Skyy FC also confirmed the FA’s three-year deal with MTN will end at the end of the 2019/20 season.
“The contract we are working is the last lap of the three years. If it comes to an end we have to re-nogotiate with them. It’s important we complete the season. So that re-nogotiating for a new deal will not be a problem,” he added.
The MTN-GFA sponsorship has been running since 2010 and remains the longest running private sponsorship package for the Ghana Football Association.
