Ghana midfielder Majeed Ashmeru finally opens on 2019 AFCON snub

Red Bull Salzburg playmaker Majeed Ashmeru has finally opened up about his surprise omission from Ghana’s squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 21 year old who was on the books of St Gallen was left out by coach Kwesi Appiah despite his meteoric rise in Switzerland.

The decision to leave Ashmeru raised a lot of eye brows and has been cited by some pundits as one of the many causes for the country’s failure in Egypt.

The Ghana U23 star says he was not shocked but a little disappointed because he wanted the honor of representing his nation at the continental showpiece.

“No it wasn’t shocking or surprising because the coach was the one to decide the players he wants for the nation and I was one of the players he didn’t pick. Most of the players selected were doing well in Europe as well so I wasn’t shocked but calm. Normally everyone wants to play for the Black Stars and was a bit disappointed but that’s okay” Ashmeru told FootballMadeInGhana.com

The Black Stars exited the tournament at the round of 16 stage after losing 5-4 on penalties to Tunisia, the country’s worst performance since 2006.
