First leg – Berekum Chelsea 0 Coton Sport 0
Second leg – Coton Sport 1 Berekum Chelsea 2 (Jacques Haman 83rd pen/ Mohammed Abdul Basit 30th, Emmanuel Clottey 90th)
Berekum Chelsea produced a masterclass to defeat the Cameroonian side on their own turf in Garoua winning by 2-1 , a defeat that had the effect of an earthquake.
The first leg at the Golden City Park on 29 April 2012 ended goalless but the talented team of Hans van der Pluijm were unshaken on Cameroonian soil as goals from skipper Mohammed Abdul Basit and Emmanuel Clottey handed the Ghanaians a rare 2-1 victory.
The game which was played at the Roumdé Adjia remains one of the best Chelsea performances externally. This crucial victory qualified the 2011 Ghana champions for the lucrative phase of the group stage of the champions league as Coton Sport were transferred to the confederation cup.
This victory laid down a marker for what will be a great group stage campaign. In a group of death that contained African powerhouses Al-Ahly, Zamalek and TP Mazembe, Berekum Chelsea were only defeated by Al-Ahly in Cairo.
The team of Basit, Clottey, Gladson Awako, Yaw Alexander, Solomon Asante and co won two times, drew three games but their 9 points were not enough to qualify them to the semi finals as Ahly and Mazembe went through on 10 points each.
The Cameroon giants , dropped from the Champions league, have been drawn against Asante Kotoko in the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
